FUNNY GIRL

The “Funny Girl” film is not a traditional cinema movie remake, but a professionally filmed (“pro-shot”) stage production of the West End revival. The production was originally staged in London (Menier Chocolate Factory → Savoy Theatre) and later toured the UK. It was recorded live at Manchester’s Palace Theatre during the tour. Liberator Film Services is the distributor handling cinema releases of this filmed production. They brought it back to cinemas for a limited UK & Ireland run starting 30 April 2026, marking the show’s 10th anniversary.

There’s always a risk when a beloved stage musical is transferred to the screen—especially one so closely associated with Barbra Streisand—but this filmed version of Funny Girl finds its strength not in imitation, but in immediacy. Anchored by Sheridan Smith at full emotional stretch, it captures the electricity of live performance while making a convincing case for the pro-shot format in cinemas.

Sheridan Smith who plays Fanny Brice is the beating heart of the production: vulnerable, funny, and fiercely determined. Her comic timing lands with the looseness of someone fully at home on stage, yet it’s in the quieter moments—particularly in “People”—that she reveals a fragile interior that the cameras are wise enough to linger on. Vocally, she doesn’t try to overpower the legacy of Streisand; instead, she leans into character, letting imperfections work in her favour.

The production itself, directed on stage by Michael Mayer, keeps things relatively intimate. That intimacy translates well to screen, thanks to unobtrusive camerawork that avoids over-editing and allows scenes to breathe. You’re always aware of the live audience—the laughter, the applause, the occasional ripple of anticipation—and rather than breaking immersion, it enhances the sense of occasion. This is theatre preserved, not cinema reinvented.

That said, the format won’t convert everyone. At around 160 minutes (interval included), the pacing can feel closer to a night at the theatre than a tightly structured film. Some transitions remain stage-bound, and viewers expecting cinematic spectacle may find it visually restrained. But that’s also part of its honesty: it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is.

Distributed for the big screen by Liberator Film Services, this release feels less like a conventional movie outing and more like an event—an opportunity to revisit a celebrated performance or experience it for the first time beyond the limitations of a theatre seat.

Ultimately, Funny Girl succeeds because of its star. Sheridan Smith doesn’t just carry the show; she reshapes it around her own strengths, making Fanny Brice feel immediate and human rather than iconic and distant. The result is a filmed musical that justifies its existence—not by replacing the live experience, but by extending its reach.
