By Royal Appointment
Legendary fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes attends the new production of By Royal Appointment which opened last night at The Arts Theatre Cambridge ahead of its UK tour.
By Royal Appointment is a funny, poignant and revealing new play offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the carefully constructed public image of Queen Elizabeth II. Famous for never revealing what she truly thought in public, the Queen had another means of communication: her wardrobe. From carefully chosen coats to statement hats, her clothes became a subtle expression of personality, diplomacy and power.
At the heart of the play is the fascinating relationship between the Queen and her Dresser — a working-class woman who rises from advising on lipstick colours to becoming one of the most influential figures behind the royal image. But life as a royal favourite can be precarious.
